Cannabis Science Inc.
Cannabis Science Inc. (OTC: CBIS) is a biotech company based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The company was incorporated in 2009 and trades publicly under the ticker CBIS on the Over-The-Counter Bulletin Board. Their goal is to obtain Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for cannabis-based medicines, with a focus on treating skin cancer (basal and squamous cell carcinomas), Posttraumatic stress disorder and HIV. They are also studying the use of cannabinoids to treat sleep disorders.
The U.S. legal cannabis industry was valued at over $2 billion in in 2014.
Management
The current CEO and president of Cannabis Science is Robert Melamede Ph.D., the former Chairman, and current professor, of the Biology Department at University of Colorado Colorado Springs. Melamede is a renowned cannabinoid researcher, and teaches a class on cannabinoids. He spoke at the 7th Annual Patients Out of Time conference, giving a presentation on cannabis oil and skin cancer.
Products
Cannabis Science aims for two product groups, over the counter products for skin care and prescription products for serious illness.
Medical Products
The main product development and research of Cannabis Science is in medical cannabis. The company plans to use whole cannabis extracts containing tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol along with the entire spectrum of cannabinoids and accessory terpenes. Although medical marijuana is available in many states, it remains illegal at the federal level; for it to be approved as prescription medication, it must be approved by the FDA, and Cannabis Science is pursuing this with a Pre-IND Application to the FDA that focuses on the use of CS-S/BCC-1 topical cannabis-based preparations for the treatment of basal and squamous cell carcinomas.
Over The Counter products
In addition to the pharmaceutical products, Cannabis Science is also in the process of producing over the counter skin products including lip balm, sunscreen, lotions for eczema and psoriasis, and general moisturizing lotions. These will include ingredients such as hemp seed oil, and non-psychoactive cannabinoids such as Cannabidiol.
Patients
Cannabis Science currently has four skin cancer patients who have self-medicated using topical cannabis oil. The company has provided pictures showing results; according to the company, the cancers have cleared without surgery or harmful side effects.
