When backrolling a doobie, you turn the rolling paper inside out and roll with the gum on the inside of the joint. It’s usually more difficult, but the end result is nicer to smoke because you end up smoking less paper. By putting the gum on the inside, you only need to wrap your mix in paper one time before you can seal it, leaving most of the rolling paper hanging on the side to be torn or burnt off before lighting up. Because the flap of excess paper sort of resembles a flag, some people also know this as ‘flagrolling.’
